WELCOME

When I was in the military, I had the incredible privilege of calling Okinawa home for 3 unforgettable years. My husband and I didn't have kids yet, but we spent countless days exploring the island with friends and their little ones--and falling in love with everything Okinwawa has to offer.

What struck me the most was the safety and serenity. It's not unusual to see you children walking home from school or playing in the streets without parental supervision. The locals are incredibly kind and respectful, and we never felt the need to look over our shoulders or guard our belongings. It's the kind of place where peace isn't just a feeling--it is a ways of life.

Unique Travel Destinations

About Okinawa

Located in the East China Sea, Okinawa is a quick 2.5 hour flight south from Tokyo. Unlike the hustle and bustle of mainland Japan, Okinawa is a tropical paradise--laid back, naturally stunning, and deeply rooted in culture and history. Its crystal clear waters and family-friendly vibe make it a must-see destination

Overall Recommendation: 9/10

Activity Highlights

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

One of the best aquariums in the world-and trust me, I've seen many (I <3 aquariums).

From whale sharks to manta rays, sea turtles to local marine life, this place is mesmerizing. They've even managed to raise whale sharks in captivity--a feat that few aquariums worldwide have accomplished.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Okinawa is a top destination for year-round diving.  Whether you are a beginner or traveling with kids, the coral reefs make the water shallow, calm, and safe. Highlights include snorkeling at the Blue Cave (no boat required!) and scuba diving in the Kerama Islands.

Bonus: For a bucket list experience, consider diving with whale sharks. I know  it's a controversial activity,  but in my personal experience, the animals appear healthy and well-cared for. It remains one of my most unforgettable moments in life.

Humpback Whale Watching

From January to early April, you can witness the majestic migration of humpback whales. Watching them breach and swim with their calves is a breathtaking experience.

Pro Tip: Book early, and pack motion-sickness meds if you are sensitive to sea travel.

Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival

Held every October, this massive cultural event is both symbolic and fun. You (and tens of thousands of people) will pull a 200-meter-long, 43-ton rope made from rice straw. At the end of the three day event, you can take home a piece of the rope for good luck!

Okinawa Peace Prayer Park

Empower
Growth

Built to honor those lost in the Battle of Okinawa during WWII, the memorial site offers panoramic views, a museum, and a quiet for meditation. It's peaceful and reflective--perhaps better suited for a solo visit or a calm day trip if your kids are especially active (like mine).

Forest Adventure Zip-Lining

This one is for the thrill-seekers! With sky-high rope ladders and fast, no-brake zip lines, this activity made me laugh until I cried (and maybe screamed a little too). It's not ideal for younger kids, but it's a wild ride for brave adults. Watch my hilarious outtakes on my Instagram stories: @luxpassportfun

Best Beaches & Tips

Beach tips

1. Wear water shoes- the coral beaches are rough on bare feet (not to mention

    the sea urchins!)

    marine life.

3. Stock up at Family Mart or Lawson's for snacks, hot meals, and even

   beach-friendly cocktails

  • Ikei Beach, Uruma

  • Cape Maeda, Onna Village

  • Sunset Beach, Chatan Town

  • Araha Beach, Nakagami District

  • North Beach, Okuma (restricted access-requires military ID)

Know Before You Go

  • Fly into Naha International Airport
  • Bring Cash (either USD or Yen)-not all taxis accept cards
  • Rent a car? You'll ned an International Driver's Permit (Japan drives on the left!)
  • No tourist visa needed for U.S. Citizens
  • Plan for drive times of 20-60 minutes between destinations-the island is small, but traffic is real
  • Typhoon season is May-October-be prepared, just in case
  • American Village is a great spot for easy dining, especially for picky eaters

Final Thoughts

Okinawa gets a solid 9/10 from me. The island's family-frieindly activities, safety, and cultural richness make it a truly unique destination. The only reason I deducted a point is due to the sometimes frustrating transportation and occasional language barriers-but nothing Google Translate and a little patience can't fix

Whether you're planning a vacation or a long-term move, Okinawa is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you'll never forget.
